Wednesday Reads: Fall in Love with a Zombie... Book.

It took me a while to figure out what topic I wanted to highlight for today. I scrolled through Google news, trying to see if there was some kind of current event that could inform my book choices. It was depressing. I definitely didn't want to put something together about the debt ceiling, or the tragedies here and around the world. Death, cataclysm, and mayhem were the highlights of every popular news story. So I decided to do a display about death, sort of. Specifically: undead. More specifically: zombies.

Let's start with the music video highlighting zombie love, before we move on to the books. Shall we? Watch it. It's got a catchy tune:

OM NOM NOM. Plump up your brain with these adult and YA books:

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

"The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. . . ." - GoodReads Rating: 4.15

The Walking Dead, Book 1 (Bk. 1)
The Walking Dead, Book 1 (Bk. 1)

"This hardcover features the first 12 issues of the hit series along with the covers for the issues in one oversized hardcover volume. Perfect for long time fans, new readers and anyone needing a slightly heavy object with which to fend off the walking dead." -GoodReads Rating: 4.29

The Forest of Hands and TeethThe Forest of Hands and Teeth

"In Mary's world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?" -GoodReads Rating: 3.61

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic NovelPride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel

"It is known as 'the strange plague,' and its unfortunate victims are referred to only as 'unmentionables' or 'dreadfuls.' All over England, the dead are rising again, and now even the daughters of Britain’s best families must devote their lives to mastering the deadly arts. Elizabeth Bennet is a fearsome warrior whose ability with a sword is matched only by her quick wit and even sharper tongue. But she faces her most formidable foe yet in the haughty, conceited, and somehow strangely attractive Mr. Darcy. As the two lovers meet in the ballroom and on the battlefield, they’ll soon learn that nothing—not even bands of ninjas, hordes of flesh-eating zombies, or disapproving aunts—can stop true love." - GoodReads Rating: 3.28

Zombies vs. UnicornsZombies vs. Unicorns

"It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths—for good and evil—of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan. This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?" -GoodReads Rating: 3.85

Rot & RuinRot & Ruin

"In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human." -GoodReads Rating: 4.27

And lastly, the following book is not for those with weak stomachs!

So one day, I was browsing some free ebooks for my ereader, and I came across this book:

Sex in the Time of ZombiesSex in the Time of Zombies

"Comprised of seven short stories set during varying points of an undead apocalypse, this collection explores the roles sex and sexuality may play in determing survival in this nightmare landscape. Stories include Dance With the Dead, Night of the Living Furries, Tender is the Nightmare, Tiffany Shepis & the Fanboy of the Apocalypse, Hips, and Skinning the Freshy. Sex . . . Zombies . . . Let the infection begin." -GoodReads Rating: 2.55

I'm not sure if Sex in the Time of Zombies still available for free download. It may be, so check your nook and/or amazon e-stores. But I will say this about it: wow. It is REALLY interesting. The author blends two different human concerns (sex and death) in a post zombie-takeover world. The short stories are intense, and made me deliciously squeamish at times, but if you're into that sort of thing: CHECK IT OUT.

What is your favorite zombie book?

Comments

  1. I love Blood Crazy by Simon Clark! And although I thought it was just okay, a lot of people love Cell by Stephen King.

  2. Ah yes, Cell. That was a good one. It was interesting in that one how the cell zombies operated in a hive mentality with a "Queen Bee."

I haven't heard of Blood Crazy. I need to check it out! OMNOM

  3. It's odd, I've never really been able to get into the zombie theme of things. I think it is fascinating, but it's never quite appealed to me, although, I do like me some zombie-comedy movies (Zombieland and Evil Dead)

  4. Both of those films are awesome.

  5. Breathers by S.G. Brown and My Life as a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland.  I've really wanted to look into Forest of Hands and Teeth, but I still haven't gotten around to it.  While I've read a few zombie books, I would say that Brown and Rowland's books top my list of favorites!

  6. Forest of Hands and Teeth is pretty good. I wasn't as enthusiastic about the sequel, however. Thanks for sharing your books! I haven't read those.

  7. I read World War Z a while back and loved it. I will have to check the other books.

  8. Unfortunately, Sex in the Time of Zombies is no longer free.  It was picked up for a print run by Living Dead Press, which means I had to yank the free version from my website.  That being said, it is still also available as an ebook from the same publisher and the new edition contains a bonus story ("The Bad Plan") which wasn't included in the original collection.

  9. Thank you for the information, Mr. Rose! That's pretty awesome that it has some new material. It is such an original collection of stories, and I recommend zombie lovers to check it out. Thanks for stopping in. :)
