Feature and Follow and Blogger Hop Friday 7/22

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

I know they are dead, but since this is a hypothetical question to begin with, I would vote for Mark Twain, Carl Sagan, and J. R. R. Tolkien. Hands down. I don't know how much talking I would do. I would just sit down and listen to them say fabulous things.

Q. What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t?

Romance. For instance, even after trying to enjoy it, I have never been a Jane Austen fan. I find the Mr. Darcy obsession intriguing but I just think it's all boring. There is such a huge following for romance, however, and a lot of good stuff out there I'm sure. And even though I have a difficult time liking the genre, every now and then I'm pleasantly surprised.

Comments

  1. I prefer my romance novels usually mixed in with another genre rather than just reading pure romance fiction.

  3. Great answers! I think there are a lot of answers with Rowling. So sad to see the end of the HP era. I'm a new follower! My answers are up at Coffee Table Reviews.

  4. I don't like this one either! Romance is okay as a sub-genre like to historical fiction but I don't ever choose romance for itself.

  5. Mark Twain - nice choice.

  6. How funny - I really don't like romances, but I do like Jane Austen. So, maybe I just don't like contemporary romances? They're too cheesy/predictable/graphic for me.

Glad to have found you via the Hop!

  7. Hopping through. I'd love to meet Tolkien...even though I'm not an LOTR fan. I'd love world-building tips.

I'll have to re-post at my blog, but Inga Muscio, Julia Butterfly Hill and Bart Ehrman.

  11. Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog! I have hard time with romance novels, too. I mean, I like light romance, like Nicholas Sparks. But I can't get through anything with Fabio on the cover :P

I see you are currently reading 'Clean'. That is next up on my TBR pile. Hope you're enjoying it!

    Happy Reading!

  12. I write romance, but I like to think my stories have more than that in them - interesting characters and situations, often a mix of other genres, whether paranormal or historical. Most of what I write is m/m but not all of it.

Thanks for the follow! Happy Friday! Following you too!

  13. Thanks for visiting my site (www.cocktailsandbooks.com). Just hopped over from your post. Following you now.

  14. Jules- I can handle a romance when it's mixed HEAVILY with another genre. Paranormal romances are generally ok with me.

Sharon - Happy Friday to you too!

Cary - I love Mark Twain too! I would have loved to hear his stories from his mouth. Have a great weekend!

Aimee- Thanks! There are TONS of answers with Rowling. I like Rowling, but sometimes I think she should be taken as a given because she's so awesome. :)

Kathy- Yeah, I like it as a subgenre as well.

Pedantic Phooka- Thanks! You have a great weekend too!

StuckInBooks- Thanks! I like him lots.

Susan- Yeah, I find most modern romances cheesy. However I don't mind a steamy scene now and then :)

Alison- World building is a huge thing with fantasy. It is really important for fantasy writers to seriously study Tolkien. He is basically the father of modern fantasy!

Becky- Oh! I'm not familiar with those authors. But I am interested. You have to tell me more about them!

Jess- No problem! I don't have to have romance in a book, but I can handle it in small bits in other kinds of books. :)

Grace- No problem! Thanks for following

Crazy Bookworm- LOL! I'll be sure to let everyone know what I think of "Clean" once I'm finished!

Julie- I'm sure your stuff is great! It's just kind of the watered down romances, of which there seem to be a lot of, that I really can't get into. Happy Friday!

Shannon- Sweet! Thanks for the follow.

  15. I like stories with romances but I need a real plot there. I stopped reading adult romances because so many of them started with a relationship breaking up.

  21. Hi, just hopping by to follow back.

Love J.R.R. Tolkien! I read LOTR and the Hobbit when I was in 4th grade and reread them when I was a little older just because I loved the books so much.

Thanks for dropping by my blog and have a wonderful weekend.

  23. Bart Ehrman is an "agnostic" biblical scholar whose books like Jesus Interrupted, Misquoting Jesus and others led me out of the belief of God.

Julia Butterfly Hill is a radical environmentalist who lived in a tree for two year and though she is radical, her words radiate love and care.

Inga Muscio is my Bodhisattva. Her books Cunt, : A Declaration of Independence, Rose : Love in Violent Times and Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Devil changed my life. I've actually reviewed Rose (http://www.thehummingbirdhollow.com/2011/05/book-list-rose-love-in-violent-times.html) and Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Devil (http://www.thehummingbirdhollow.com/2011/07/book-list-autobiography-of-blue-eyed.html)on my blog.

What is more incredible for me was that she recently came for a book reading at our local independent bookstore (http://www.thehummingbirdhollow.com/2011/06/meeting-your-muse-inga-muscio.html)!

  30. I wasn't into romance for the longest time. I think it was about my age though. In the past six months I've started reading some, and I really like it, but I could never only read romance. Jane Austen, I've been reading for years and I love her so much. She's just so clever!

Tolkien is such a great choice. I decided to choose living authors, but if I hadn't, he'd definitely be on my list.

Thanks for following. I'm following back.

  31. Tolkien and Twain - now there would be a salty convo! I'm not sure what Sagan would add to this mix though (unfamiliar with him).

AgnesPink- Thanks! I love it too. Glad that makes both of us. :)

Laura- You and me both with Tolkien! I guess I was taking the hypothetical to the extreme with choosing authors who have already passed. :)

BookBelle- Sagan was an astrophysicist who wrote a lot of books on the cosmos and the evolutionary history of the human race. He did it in a way that was fascinating and really made you feel awesome inside. I just love his stuff.

    Scather- Thanks Scather!

Hillary- That is awesome that you are getting an MLIS! I am planning on making categories of blog lists soon and one of them is going to be along the lines of "Book Blogger Librarians."

Stephanie- Thanks for stopping by! You should check out Sagan. He's awesome. His famous fiction piece was that movie that came out a few years ago called "Contact." But most of his stuff is non fiction.

Daniel- Thank you! Glad you could stop by.
