Websites Where You Can Get Free E-Books

I was pleased to find the article Free E-books for Happy Patrons in Booklist Online's The Corner Shelf. In it, author Rebecca Vnuk shares some great online resources librarians and library patrons can use to access free ebooks.

The great thing about it is that you don't have to be a library patron or librarian to appreciate the following list:

InkMesh is a search engine that searches over 30 online sources for free e-books. You can search by title or author.

 Project Gutenberg, the original site for free text online, offers more than 33,000 free books that play nicely with any e-reader platform. You’ll find mostly classics and public-domain works here. No registration is required, and the site is easy to use. A nice feature is their “bookshelves”—collections grouped by topic.

Baen Books, publisher of science fiction and fantasy, offers a number of their titles as free downloads. Established authors such as Eric Flint, Lois McMaster Bujold, Mercedes Lackey, and David Weber can be found here. There are currently 120 titles available, with new titles added every month. You can save e-books to your computer or send them directly to a Kindle.

 The University of Pennsylvania Libraries Online Books page offers an index of hundreds of thousands of online books freely readable on the Internet.

Now that Kindle and Nook are open to file sharing, eBookFling offers users the chance to swap e-books for free with other readers nationwide while still retaining ownership. For every five books listed to loan out, users get one “credit” toward borrowing.

 Library staff [and book reviewers] can try NetGalley, which offers free e-book galleys to any professional reader, featuring 30 categories from more than 60 publishers.

 The Digital Reader  is a blog devoted to news, reviews, and opinions on everything e-book.

 Ebookanoid  reviews e-readers, e-books, and the websites devoted to them.

I'm looking forward to checking out a few I haven't seen yet. Also, some authors, like Cory Doctorow, will let you download books for free, and for many authors, giving away free e-books is an essential marketing strategy. So that is something else to keep in mind.

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from? I know they are dead, but since this is a hypothetical question to begin with, I would vote for Mark Twain, Carl Sagan, and J. R. R. Tolkien. Hands down. I don't know how much talking I would do. I would just sit down and listen to them say fabulous things.  Q. What’s the ONE GENRE that you wish you could get into, but just can’t? Romance. For instance, even after trying to enjoy it, I have never been a Jane Austen fan. I find the Mr. Darcy obsession intriguing but I just think it's all boring. There is such a huge following for romance, however, and a lot of good stuff out there I'm sure. And even though I have a difficult time liking the genre, every now and then I'm pleasantly surprised.

Oh man. I love a lot of the same stuff I loved as a teen. But that doesn't mean my reading habits haven't changed, they have. I think they've changed for the better. When I was a teen, I was only into fantasy fiction, today, I'm into all sorts of crazy things like books about philosophy, sociology, psychology, religion, science, etc. I've also broadened my fiction reading into not just fantasy, but regular fiction as well.   Q. E-Reading in the Bathtub?

Okay, so a lot of people say that e-readers never will replace print because they just, well, love paper books so much. I get it. When I get a new hardbound book and crack open the cover for the first time, the smell is intoxicating. I swear publishers put some kind of drug in the book binding glue to make it so addictive. But I also love my e-reader, and have been using it more and more... and in some cases, I'm preferring it over some paper books (because it isn't as heavy). Also, in June 2011, adult paperback books plunged 64% from last year, while e-book sales went up 161 percent . This suggests that while many hardcover books are still being purchased (though it dropped 25 % in the same month), people who just want to read a book for the sake of the words, and not the format (i.e. paperback readers), are starting to gravitate towards e-books. Libraries have growing digital collections, and some libraries have already started lending e-readers . I think in the future,
